Music is a very important and joyful part of life at Bayford School. We recognise that children are innately musical and we seek to foster and develop this through a highly practical and enjoyable music curriculum. Singing is at the heart of what we do because it is the most accessible and immediate way for us to make music. In addition, we introduce basic classroom instruments such as tuned and untuned percussion. Through singing and playing, children can progressively develop a practical understanding of how music works, and will develop a basic level of music literacy.
Music is also used to support and work alongside all other curriculum areas. We are currently developing and trialling a programme which combines physical exercise and music, a resource which we hope to publish in 2020.
Music at Bayford Primary School is led by music specialist, Katie Neilson, who works part-time to train and mentor our class teachers, deliver music lessons and to develop music across the school. When not at Bayford school, Katie works as a senior teacher with national music education charity, The Voices Foundation as well as running her own local business Little Bees which delivers music classes to babies, toddlers and their grown ups in Hertford Theatre!
Children at Bayford school love music and achieve really well! Our KS2 class choirs, which include all class members, regularly perform at the local schools music festival and carol service. These events are not intended as a competition, however, it is noticeable that they are performing at the same level as the very best of the larger local school choirs.
